Why does the Drumkit Outlook add-in keep unpinning itself?

Last updated: July 16, 2026

Symptom
The Drumkit task pane stays pinned for a while (often a few emails), then unpins on its own — closing the pane and requiring you to reopen and re-pin Drumkit to keep working.

Cause
This is a known limitation in Outlook's own add-in platform, not a Drumkit-specific bug. Microsoft's Office Add-ins platform has open, unresolved issues where pinned task panes lose their pinned state over time, particularly in New Outlook and Outlook on the web. This same behavior has been reported by users of other, unrelated Outlook add-ins — it's a platform-wide quirk in how Outlook manages pinning, not something isolated to one vendor's code.

Workarounds

  • Re-pin Drumkit each time it unpins (currently the most reliable fix, since this is on Microsoft's side).

  • If you regularly switch between Classic Outlook and New Outlook, try staying on one version — switching between them can reset pane/pin state.

  • Restarting Outlook can sometimes trigger the pin to drop again, so re-pin after any restart.

Status
We don't have a way to force Outlook to hold the pin more reliably, since that behavior lives entirely in Microsoft's client. We're tracking Microsoft's fixes to this and will update this article if their behavior changes.
